Letter from VT Governor Douglas to DHHS Secretary Sebelius

May 3rd, 2010

May 3, 2010

The Honorable Kathleen Sebelius
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
200 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, DC 20201

Dear Secretary Sebelius:

I am writing to express my concern that the Administration is developing a trade policy that will conflict with the ability of the states and the Federal government to continue best practices to control pharmaceutical prices. This policy may be expressed in the "Special 301" Report issued by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) by the end of this month. Organizations representing state officials have requested that the USTR reverse the previous administration's support for using trade policy to restrict government powers to control medicine prices. I am writing to ask you to support this request and
help develop a coherent administration policy protecting the authority of governments to continue pharmaceutical price restraining policies...
